# ROSE\_SITE - is anyone using it (outside of rose\_stem)

Currently Rose2019 can be configured to provide the `ROSE_SITE` environment and Jinja2 variable automatically based on the value of the [`rose.conf|site`](http://metomi.github.io/rose/doc/html/api/configuration/site-and-user.html#rose:conf:rose.conf%7Csite) setting.

> **Note:** This is similar, but completely separate from the identical `ROSE_SITE` variable some sites may have configured for use with `rose_stem` which is implemented via the [rose.conf[rose-stem]automatic-options=SITE](http://metomi.github.io/rose/doc/html/api/configuration/site-and-user.html#rose:conf:rose.conf%5Brose-stem%5Dautomatic-options) configuration and is only available to suites run via the `rose stem` command.

We are considering retiring the former (`rose.conf|site`) and moving this functionality into Cylc (as `CYLC_SITE`?) where it would make more sense. This is a fairly recent feature which may not be in use. Before we remove it, is this feature in use anywhere?
